This morning I attended the 2009 National Philanthropy Day Awards Breakfast of the Cape Fear Region Chapter. I was invited by a friend and am thrilled I agreed to attend. Before today I had never heard of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). The AFP represents more than 30,000 members in 206 chapters throughout the world, working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs. The association fosters development and growth of fundraising professionals and promotes high ethical standards in the fundraising profession. The purpose of this morning’s breakfast was to present awards to individuals and corporations for their fundraising and volunteer achievements.
During the event, I had the opportunity to network with several individuals about their ’secrets’ of getting volunteers and donations. The best remark came from Mr. Yona Bar-Zeev (nominated for Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year), who stated “start at the bottom and use all your members”. I’m sure as you are reading this blog, you are saying ‘that’s right’. Well sometimes when you are in the middle of everything you can’t see the trees for the forest. So take the lesson of the day and contact all those unit members to get them involved in your projects. It isn’t necessary for every member to participate in every activity - ask them to pick one and you’ll be amazed at what that member will do.
